HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Gov. Ron DeSantis has announced his support for a proposed law that aims to create more transparency in health-care pricing.
If approved, the bill -- originally introduced by state Sen. Manny Diaz, R-Hialeah -- would create an online portal that patients can access to break down medical costs, compare the costs of certain procedures and even apply for financial assistance, if needed. They'll also be able to schedule appointments as well.
The governor announced he is supporting the bill during a stop Wednesday morning at Memorial Regional Hospital. He wants to model the system after a similar portal that the hospital is already using.
"Really, the transparency, if it's there, how does that benefit a patient or how does that benefit a consumer?" DeSantis said. "And there needs to be a system so that they can actually benefit by making informed decisions."
A similar bill is sponsored by state Rep. Paul Renner, R-Palm Coast, in the House.
