Protesters gather outside U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart's office in Doral

Protesters against what they call Trump's 'immigration enforcement budget'

DORAL, Fla. – Protesters who are angry over President Donald Trump's agenda gathered Tuesday outside U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart's office in Doral.

"The people, united, will not be defeated" was just one of the chants heard from dozens of demonstrators.

The group came to South Florida from all across the country and was joined by people who live in South Florida.

The protesters gathered outside Diaz-Balart's office, calling on him to vote against what they're calling "President Trump's immigration enforcement budget."

Organizers said they're disappointed in the congressman for voting to fund the border wall.

Instead, they said he and Congress should fight for health care, education and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which protects young immigrants from deportation. They also said he should support temporary protection status.

"I'm fighting to stay here to give them a better future, like the one my parents gave me," Paola Rodriguez, who lives in Austin, Texas, said.

"What should be happening is that we should be providing a permanent solution, because we know these are families that are the fabric of America -- they make America already great," said Sulma Arias, of the Fair Immigration Reform Movement at the Center for Community Change.

Others who live in South Florida were also outraged about Diaz-Balart's support for issues involving immigration, such as his support to fund the border wall.

"First of all, for them, who are also Cuban and came as immigrants, they should be ashamed of themselves," Silvia Munoz, who lives in Doral, said.

A group of staffers came outside the office, including the chief of staff, but they would not tell reporters where the congressman was and declined to give any statements.

They did, however, agree to meet with constituents, and only constituents, after checking their licenses and escorting them inside with police on hand.
