Scholarship set up to help children of Miami Gardens soldier killed in Niger

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project has set up a scholarship to benefit the children of U.S. Army Sgt. La David T. Johnson.

Johnson, 25, is a Miami Gardens native who was killed earlier this month while providing training and security assistance to the Nigerien Armed Forces.

Terror group Boko Haram has a heavy presence in the region.

The foundation has set up the scholarship to provide a college fund for Johnson's children, ages 2 and 6, and his unborn child with his wife, Myeshia Johnson, who is pregnant. 

U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Florida, is the founder of the organization leading the effort.
