Teen Pregnancy Prevention Conference held Saturday

OIC hosts "Use Your Mind, Not Your Body Conference"

DAVIE, Fla. – Opportunities Industrialization Centers, or OIC, is hosting a Use Your Mind, Not Your Body conference Saturday focused on teen pregnancy prevention.

Florida has the highest rate of new HIV cases among 13-19-year-olds, a rate that coincides with the higher rate of sexual activity for Florida adolescents versus the national average.

OIC, established in 1964, aims to chance the statistics.

"There's an immense amount of media pressure for young people to fit in," said Newton Sanon, Executive Director of OIC.  "But we have to make sure we raise the standard for young people to understand that if they don't make make the right decisions, they can derail their academic and vocational gains for the rest of their lives."

Saturday's conference will feature workshops and discussion panels open to teens and parents. It is being held at the Signature Grand Hotel in Davie from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, click here.
