Vigil held for 5 officers killed in Dallas shooting

Hundreds wore blue, held American flags, candles

Dallas – Officers and civilians stood side by side in front of Dallas City Hall, to honor the lives lost in an ambush shooting Thursday night.

It was more than a vigil for the five fallen police officers. It was a rally and a call for change. The battle cry echoed, bouncing off building walls.

"I challenge anyone who comes here and thinks they're going to tear us apart," a speaker said.

A crowd of hundreds sporting blue attire and carrying American flags crowded the plaza holding candles.

Hundreds of police officers also gathered, remembering five fallen heroes as the city continues to heal.

The crowd prayed for those still recovering from wounds received during Thursday night's downtown ambush.

A doctor who treated several dying Dallas police officers says the last four days have been a living hell, adding that as a black man he's feared police but begs for an end to the senseless bloodshed.

"I've been there and I understand that, but that for me that does not condone disrespecting or killing police officers," Dr. Brian Williams, a trauma surgeon at Parkland Memorial Hospital, said.

Police say Micah Johnson stood watch in a downtown Dallas parking garage and just started taking aim at white police officers. It happened during a Black Lives Matter protest against police brutality.

He would do so much damage in such a short amount of time, until police used a robot to deliver an explosive that killed him.

The gunman's parents spoke out claiming they never thought this would happen.

"I love my son with all my heart," he cried. " I hate what he did."
