FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — After surpassing its fundraising goal for their VCA Walk for the Animals event last week, the Humane Society of Broward County has set a new objective: finding a home for Bennett and some of their other furry friends.
Local 10 spoke Saturday with HSBC’s Cherie Wachter, who said the annual event exceeded expectations.
“Our goal was $535,000. We’re at over $580,000,” Wachter said. “So thank you to everybody in South Florida and beyond that took part in the event, that sponsored people, came out and had fun.”
Now, she said, the focus shifts back to the animals — including Bennett, an 8-week-old puppy ready for adoption.
Wachter said Bennett was raised in a foster home with her siblings and is now available at the Humane Society along with her brother, Barkoff. Wachter described her as “little but mighty.”
As for her breed, Wachter said Bennett is likely a bully mix, possibly with Labrador, and could grow to between 40 and 60 pounds.
“It’s really hard to say when they’re this little,” Wachter said, adding that what matters most is finding the right fit. “She is going to need a family that’s got time to devote to training her, socializing her and welcoming her into their family — and likes to be active.”
The shelter is also highlighting small pets in need of homes.
Minnie and Winnie, a pair of guinea pig sisters, are available for adoption after being abandoned in a box outside the shelter in November. Too small at the time to be adopted, they were placed in foster care and are now ready for permanent homes.
Wachter noted that March is “Adopt a Guinea Pig Month” and said the shelter currently has four guinea pigs available.
“Guinea pigs, like all animals, need exercise,” she said. “They need a diet rich in leafy green vegetables, they need some vitamin C, Timothy hay, and they are curious, cute, and ready to fall in love with you.”
