Phelps, Lochte face off in individual medley finals

Phelps has now won 26 career medals

Michael Phelps won his fourth gold medal of the Rio Games with a victory in the 200-meter individual medley on Thursday night.

The medal extends Phelps' Olympic record to 26 career medals, including 22 golds.

Japan's Kosuke Hagino won silver while Wang Shun of China took bronze.

Ryan Lochte, Phelps' longtime friend and rival, finished fifth.

Phelps has now won the 200m individual medley at the last four Olympic Games, dating back to Athens in 2004.

Phelps, 31, has said the Rio Games are his last, and while Lochte hasn't made the same declaration, at 32 years old, he isn't likely to swim at the 2020 Tokyo Games either.

Phelps and Lochte, the world record holder in the event coming into Rio, were also part of the gold medal-winning 4x200-meter freestyle relay team on Tuesday.
