"I was a little disappointed he put the ball on the ground," head coach Adam Gase said. "I don't think we've had the ball on the ground the entire preseason as far as the running backs. I expect better from him. I have higher standards for him."

Ajayi finished with three carries for 13 rushing yards and could lose the starting running back job to newcomer Arian Foster, who skipped the game, along with quarterback Ryan Tannehill and the rest of the starters.

Rookie quarterback Brandon Doughty, who played high school football in South Florida, completed 8 of 12 passes for 98 yards.

Doughty was a seventh-round draft pick, but his status with the team remains unsettled.

"I was kind of saying my goodbyes to some of these guys in case something happens," he said. "I'm really hoping that I make the 53(-man roster)."
