MIAMI – The late pitcher Jose Fernandez was married before he played his first game for the Miami Marlins, according to a newly obtained Florida marriage record.
A state of Florida marriage record shows that Fernandez, who was killed in a boating accident in September, married Alejandra Baleato Marichal on Dec. 2, 2012, in Tampa. They were both 20 at the time.
According to the Miami Herald, Marichal said they were married from 2012 to about 2014.
"It was very short," she said of the marriage.
Fernandez made his Marlins debut in 2013. He was named the National League Rookie of the Year that same season.
His girlfriend was pregnant at the time of his death.
