UM-Florida State football game postponed due to Irma

Game to rescheduled for Oct. 7

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Hurricane Irma has forced the postponement of next Saturday's Miami-Florida State football game.

With Irma forecast to move near Tallahassee over the next few days, Florida State University will remain closed through Friday.

The rivalry game, originally scheduled to be played at 8 p.m. Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium on Local 10, will now be played in Tallahassee on Oct. 7.

With the storm expected to cause widespread damage throughout the state, playing the game would have been difficult logistically as hotels, travel and other accommodations would need to be arranged so soon after dealing with Irma.

"As important as football is to all of us, these kinds of events provide perspective when you're talking about life-threatening events and the aftermath ramifications," Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford said. "It quickly became clear that it was in the best interest of our players, coaches and fans to reschedule next week's Miami at Florida State game. Typically, it's not easy to reschedule games, but in this instance, there was a clear path to adjust quickly and effectively."

In addition to the Seminoles game, Miami's Oct. 12 game at Georgia Tech will be pushed back by two days to Oct. 14 due to ACC rules requiring teams to get equal rest ahead of games.

Both the Hurricanes and Seminoles canceled games scheduled for this weekend due to Irma. Miami was to travel to Arkansas State, while FSU was scheduled to host Louisiana-Monroe.
