Former Miami Heat center Willie Reed arrested on domestic violence charge

Reed's wife asked for divorce during an argument, police say

MIAMI – Former Miami Heat center Willie Reed was arrested early Sunday on a domestic violence charge.

Reed was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center shortly after 3 a.m.

According to a Miami police arrest affidavit, Reed, 27, got upset after his wife, Jasmine Reed, told him that she wanted a divorce.

The couple were arguing at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday on the balcony of their Miami home.

Willie Reed then told his wife to leave and not to take anything he bought her.

When Jasmine Reed grabbed her purse, Willie Reed tried to take it from her and a struggle ensued, the arrest report said. Jasmine Reed was knocked to the floor dragged until the strap broke.

She ran from the balcony into the apartment, at which time Willie Reed grabbed her shirt, causing it to tear, the report said.

Jasmine Reed then made it to the lobby of the building, with her purse in hand, and left the bag with the concierge before heading back upstairs to get her children, the report said.

When Jasmine Reed picked up her youngest son and headed toward the elevator, which opens in the apartment, Willie Reed came up behind her and grabbed her by the hair, the report said. He then tried to take the child away.

Jasmine Reed let go of the child, the report said, and Willie Reed grabbed her left wrist and twisted her arm, causing her to kneel on the floor.

While bent over, Jasmine Reed grabbed a glass candle off a table and struck her husband in the back of the head with it, the report said. She then got on the elevator, went to the lobby of the building and asked the concierge to call police.

After being read his rights, Willie Reed said he never put his hands on his wife, but that he did grab the purse and her shirt, the report said. He also said that he touched his wife's hair.

Police noted on Willie Reed’s arrest report that Jasmine Reed had red marks on her left wrist, right bicep, right side of her chest and her back. She also had a swollen left foot.

Willie Reed was later released on a $1,500 bond.

Court records show that he has been ordered to not have contact with his wife.

Willie Reed spent last season with the Heat, starting five games and averaging 5.3 points per game. He signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Clippers this month.
