Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared a state of emergency in New Mexico's largest city, saying that a significant increase in crime in Albuquerque warrants the help of the New Mexico National Guard.

A private investigator was the first to plead guilty to a host of federal charges that include racketeering and bribery in a corruption scandal that roiled New Mexico’s law enforcement community for over a decade, according to court records released Friday.

A civil rights group is suing the city of Albuquerque, its police department and top officials on behalf of a man who was among those arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and later forced to pay bribes to get the charges dropped.
