NEW YORK - The Miami Heralds stories on sex trafficking charges against billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein illustrate a counter-intuitive trend: Investigative journalism is thriving as the news media industry struggles. The Heralds story came as news organizations are finding that investigative work helps them stand out and is rewarding in a rough business climate. It used to be said in this business that we couldnt afford to do investigative journalism, said Martin Baron, executive editor of the Washington Post. Now we have to do investigative journalism. Many of the Posts new subscribers cite investigative work as a reason for signing up, and those are the stories readers are drawn to, Baron said.
