Boat hits channel marker off Miami, injures 11 people
Four people suffered critical injuries when a boat hit a channel marker near Boca Chita Key and capsized, officials said. Eleven of the 14 people on the boat were injured in the crash that happened just before 7 p.m. Sunday, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said in a news release. The agency sent more than 10 units to the scene and worked alongside Miami-Dade Police marine patrol units, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to clear the scene.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava recently announced updates to the public safety leadership overseeing the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR), Corrections and Rehabilitation Department (MDCR) and Medical Examiner. Since February 2022, Ramirez has served as interim Chief Public Safety Officer overseeing MDPD, MDFR and the Medical Examiner. Since February, Patterson has served on special assignment overseeing MDCR, bringing his extensive experience in public safety to advance critical reforms to the county’s correctional facilities. George A. Perez, who has served since February as the interim director of Miami-Dade Police Department, will take on a special assignment as assistant director, overseeing police operations in the Corrections Department. He will work closely with Chief Patterson to ensure transparency and accountability within corrections.

As the summer heat continues to climb, Zoo Miami was privileged recently to collaborate with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) Engine 37 to help provide a special treat for “Ongard,” affectionately called, “Ardy,” an 11-year-old male Asian elephant. The MDFR team was able to bring in their vehicle adjacent to the elephant habitat and connect to a fire hydrant on zoo grounds so that they could use the truck’s fire house to bathe Ardy in a wonderful cooling shower as hundreds of guests watched. This experience is just one of many activities coordinated by zoo staff as part of a carefully managed enrichment program. These programs are developed to mentally and physically stimulate the animals living at the zoo which is important in maintaining their overall health. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to reports of an aircraft that made an emergency landing at Miami International Airport. Fire crews arrived to find one of the wings of the aircraft on fire. Airport firefighter foam trucks on scene were used to extinguish and place the fire under control. Firefighters on scene conducted a primary search to ensure there were no souls left onboard of the aircraft. The fire was placed under control and units mitigated a fuel spillage from the aircraft.
