Voters in Portugal are returning to the polls for a third general election in three years, as the country’s increasingly fragmented political landscape defies efforts to unite behind policies on pressing national issues such as immigration, housing and the cost of living.

Portugal’s minority government has lost a confidence vote in parliament, forcing its resignation and bringing the European Union country’s third general election in three years.

Portugal is holding an early general election on Sunday when 10.8 million registered voters will elect 230 lawmakers, who will then choose a new government.
