13 passengers to stay aboard Coral Princess
MIAMI, Fla. – Despite continued efforts through diplomatic channels, 13 international guests will stay aboard the Coral Princess with crew members for a self-imposed 14-day quarantine. The passengers will stay on board and be monitored to reduce the possibility of transmission if either guests or crew become symptomatic. The cruise line said additional members boarded the Coral Princess Thursday to assist in the quarantine. Coral Princess left the Port of Miami Thursday around 7 p.m.Five charter flights were scheduled for departure Thursday for the remaining passengers who were allowed to disembark. Princess Cruises did not offer information as to what countries the passengers were from, or where the ship was headed after leaving Miami’s port.

MIAMI – About 90 international passengers remain aboard the Coral Princess ship at PortMiami, as others left Tuesday on nine additional domestic charter flights, a spokesperson for Princess Cruises said. Princess Cruises confirmed two people on board died while the ship was at sea and there were 12 cases of the new coronavirus. A third passenger, Wilson Maa, of California, died at a Hialeah hospital Saturday night after waiting for hours to be taken off the ship. The cruise line said 545 guests disembarked Coral Princess on Sunday and another 139 left Monday, leaving 274 on board. According to the spokesperson, Coral Princess departed March 5 from San Antonio (Santiago) for a South America voyage, which was scheduled to end in Buenos Aires on March 19.

According to a news release, the ship was expected to sail to Rio de Janeiro Tuesday in an effort to repatriate guests as quickly as possible. “Although Brazil has been closed to cruise ship traffic, we are working through diplomatic channels to obtain permission and have received positive responses,” the cruise line stated in the news release. “Guests who purchased flights through Princess will be automatically rebooked on flights,” the news release stated. Carnival's Princess Cruises said it has placed 3,700 passengers and crew under mandatory quarantine for two weeks after 10 people aboard a cruise ship in Yokohama, Japan, tested positive for the new coronavirus. The company said a previous guest, who didn't have any symptoms while aboard the ship, tested positive for the coronavirus on Saturday six days after leaving the Diamond Princess. The ship was being held in Japan for 24 hours while Japanese health authorities assessed the 3,700 passengers and crew on board. The ship will be quarantined for at least 14 days, the company said, as is required by the Japanese Ministry of Health. "We were notified that amongst the samples that have completed testing, 10 people have tested positive for coronavirus."
