A Los Angeles County firefighter appeared to have a longstanding job-related dispute with the co-worker he fatally shot at their rural fire station this week.

Authorities say an off-duty Los Angeles County firefighter fatally shot a fellow firefighter and wounded another at their fire station before going to his nearby home, setting it on fire and apparently killing himself.

Gavin Newsom announced a new, color-coded process Friday, Aug. 28, 2020, for reopening California businesses amid the coronovirus pandemic that is more gradual than the state's current rules to guard against loosening restrictions too soon. A suspect in the shooting at Saugus High School is in custody and is being treated at a hospital, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said on Twitter. The suspect is believed to be a student at the school, Villanueva told CNN affiliate KABC. Some students fled the building immediately, and others took cover inside rooms, another student told CNN affiliate KTLA. "It was one and then four quick ones, so bang, and then bang, bang, bang, bang," the student, a girl, told CNN affiliate KTLA, after leaving the building. Saugus High School, about 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles, has about 2,400 students, according to the district.

The Tick fire near Santa Clarita broke out Thursday and in just a few hours has burned about 3,700 acres, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. Mandatory evacuations were ordered for homes in the northern area of Los Angeles County and several shelters were opened. The group later wrote they were able to transfer all animals out of the barn after they were ordered to evacuate. Sarah Moon reported from Los Angeles.
