A U.S. green card holder faces deportation after helping lead student protests at Columbia University in New York last spring over the war in Gaza.

Immigration officials are saying that anyone living in the U.S. illegally will soon have to register with the federal government, and those who fail to do so could face fines, imprisonment or both.

El Salvador has offered to take in people deported from the U.S. for entering the country illegally as well as the country’s violent criminals — even if they’re American citizens.
