Girlfriend says man killed in Kendale Lakes crash was not drunk

Police suspect driver was speeding, under influence of alcohol

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – The girlfriend of an 18-year-old man who died Saturday after crashing his car in Miami-Dade County's Kendale Lakes neighborhood told Local 10 News Monday that her boyfriend had been drinking before the crash, but was not drunk.

Local 10 News reporter Sanela Sabovic spoke to Nedian "Ned" Alvarez's girlfriend, identified only as Sabrina, who said that she had been dating the high school senior for six years.

Police said Alvarez was driving east on Southwest 62nd Street with four of his friends when he lost control of his blue 2005 Nissan Altima at Southwest 138th Path and crashed between a tree and a wall.

Police identified the front-seat passenger as David Cuadros, 18. The back-seat passengers were identified as Deandre Cabrali, Cesar Lizarzaburu and George Pong, all 18.

Police said all four were taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center, where they are listed in critical but stable condition.

Police said they suspected that Alvarez was under the influence of alcohol when he crashed the car and they believe that he was speeding.

Sabrina said the couple was looking forward to the birth of their daughter in January and Alvarez hoped to purse a degree in psychology after graduating from Miami Sunset Senior High School.

A makeshift memorial now remains at the crash site, where Alvarez's loved ones continued to show up to Monday to mourn the loss of the young man.
