Driver, 3 others taken to hospital after crash

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – One person has died after an SUV crashed into a bus bench near Memorial Regional Hospital South in Hollywood, authorities said on Tuesday.

The crash was reported Monday afternoon at 3700 Washington St.

Hollywood police spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said a man, identified as Hugh Moraga Iglesias, 75, was behind the wheel of a Honda CRV when he lost control of his vehicle and struck three people.

Witnesses told Local 10 News that two of the victims were pinned underneath the SUV.

Grossman said the driver and the three victims were taken to Memorial Regional, where Cynthia Alice Schafer, 59, of Fort Lauderdale, was pronounced dead.

The victim's nephew said his grandmother, Patricia Cooper, was also injured in the crash and remains hospitalized with broken vertebrae in her neck and back. He has created a GoFundMe page to help with her medical costs.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by detectives with Hollywood police's traffic homicide unit.
