BOCA RATON, Fla. – A tow truck driver died Wednesday morning after he fell from an entrance ramp overpass to Interstate 95, where a tractor-trailer overturned in Boca Raton.
He was identified as Richard Randolph, 69, of Boca Raton. Randolph worked for Emerald Towing, which is based in Pompano Beach.
Southbound lanes of I-95 near Congress Avenue were closed for several hours while authorities investigated the crash and death.
The tractor-trailer was dangling off the overpass, forcing the Florida Highway Patrol to close the lanes.
FHP Sgt. Mark Wysocky said Randolph, who was trying to help upright the truck, was standing on a narrow ledge when he fell off about 6:45 a.m. and died.
"The southbound lanes of I-95 were already closed, so he was not struck by another vehicle, but he was pronounced dead in the roadway," Wysocky said.
Wysocky said the driver of the tractor-trailer lost control of the vehicle about 5:30 a.m., when he crashed. The driver, identified as Adrian Figueredo, 38, of Miami, was not injured.
Traffic was backed up for hours because of the crash and investigation.
Emerald Towing had no comment about the incident.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
