Driver of BMW killed in crash with Publix delivery truck

PINECREST, Fla. – A fatal crash involving a Publix truck Tuesday morning shut down a stretch of U.S. Highway 1 in both directions.

The crash was reported shortly before 5 a.m. at U.S. Highway 1 and Southwest 148th Street in Palmetto Bay.

Miami-Dade police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said a BMW was traveling north on U.S. Highway 1 when it crashed into the Publix delivery truck as it was turning onto the highway.

The driver of the BMW, who was found with a cellphone near his hand, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the car was taken to Jackson South Community Hospital. His condition wasn't immediately known.

The driver of the truck wasn't injured but was visibly shaken, according to witnesses.

U.S. 1 was shut down between Southwest 144th and Southwest 152nd streets during the crash investigation. Southbound lanes have since reopened.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
