KINGSTON – Jamaicans were spared from Hurricane Matthew.

Authorities downgraded the hurricane warning to a tropical storm warning when the storm began to move west on Monday.

Some streets in Kingston were flooded and there were large waves. 

With sustained winds of 140 mph, meteorologists expected the storm to continue its northern journey to impact Haiti the hardest. 

Hundreds were in shelters in St. Thomas and Kingston. Major Basil Jarrett, of the Jamaica Defence Force said there were about 30 residents in Pedro Cays who refused to evacuate, and were safe after the storm.
