FPL: Shutting down Turkey Point will not impact pre-storm power

MIAMI – One of the many rumors circulating as Hurricane Irma draws closer to South Florida is that residents will lose power once FPL shuts down the Turkey Point nuclear plant ahead of the storm.

In a briefing Friday, FPL CEO & President Eric Silagy shot down that rumor, saying the shut down of Turkey point and the company's other nuclear plant will not affect power in the area.

Silagy reiterated that residents will not lose power due to the shutdown.

However, depending on where Irma makes landfall in Florida, as many as 9 million people could lose electricity during and after the storm.

Silagy said that once the storm safely passes, FPL crews will immediately go to work to restore any power that is lost.

"We are more prepared now that at any other time in the history of our company," said Silagy.

Crews will be working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until electricity is returned to every resident.

But Silagy cautioned worried Floridians that despite the massive workforce in the field, getting the lights back on may not happen quickly.

"The outages will not be measured in days, but weeks."
