Stores run low on supplies as South Florida prepares for Irma

MIAMI ā€“ As Hurricane Irma continues to make its way towards a possible strike on the Southeastern U.S., stores in South Florida are beginning to see a rush for supplies.

Several Publix supermarkets were full before noon Monday as residents grabbed water, non-perishable food and other items.

"I've been through hurricanes and they're like 'oh it's going to hit right here' and then it hits 30, 40 miles up the coast and it kind of changes the way everything goes so, better safe than sorry.," said Greg Andrews.

A run on water was already underway at the Publix location on Sheridan Street in Hollywood, while customers tweeted video of empty shelves at other stores around South Florida.

Publix officials say they are ready and fully-stocked for those preparing for the storm and will continue to replenish supplies throughout the week.

Home Depot stores in Miami-Dade and Broward were relatively calm on Labor Day holiday, although there were those looking to beat the rush.

"I don't want to be stuck out, everyone else is usually late shopping, last minute things there is nothing there." said one Home Depot customer.

As with Publix, officials at Home Depot say they are ready for a surge as the week continues.

Shoppers at the BJ's Wholesale warehouse location in Coral Springs said lines wrapped around the entire inside of the store, but claimed people were calm and composed.
