CUTLER BAY, Fla. – The rush to get ready for the hurricane that's threatening South Florida went late into the night Tuesday as the long lines continued at a Home Depot in Cutler Bay.
As of late Tuesday, the store had run out of generators, sandbags and gas tanks.
Earlier in the day, the store got a fresh supply of plywood, but it flew off the shelves.
South Floridians are getting ready for Hurricane Irma, a powerful Category 5 storm that continues to threaten South Florida.
Employees at the Home Depot off U.S. 1 and Florida’s Turnpike said and they expect to get more plywood throughout the night in addition to other hurricane supplies, such as batteries and flashlights.
Grocery stores, like a Publix near downtown Miami, have run out of water more than once.
One woman said she's stocked up and she's trying not to panic.
"This is a first for me," she said. "I'm really scared, to be honest with you."
Local 10 News cameras were rolling as one man chased down another after getting into a fight over plywood. The attacker tried to run away, but he was later detained by police.
"I got everything I need,” one shopper said. "I lived through Andrew. It's best to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. That's my motto."
The shopper is referring to Hurricane Andrew, a Category 5 storm that caused severe damage to the southern part of Miami-Dade County when it struck 25 years ago.
The sense at the Home Depot was that they won’t put up their plywood for the next few days, but they want to be ready for the storm.
Over in Miami Shore, another Home Depot saw long lines as people bought hurricane supplies.
The store was running low of tarps, batteries and plywood – but they are expecting more shipments to come in, a store manager said.
