SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba – Hurricane Matthew left dozens of families homeless and roadways blocked on the island of Cuba Wednesday.
In Baracoa and Guantanamo, there were fallen trees. Cuban police and military were working to clear roads across the eastern tip of the island.

Residents of neighborhoods with poor infrastructure used the government sandbags to prevent their thin roofs from flying away.
Residents of farming communities abandoned their homes and traveled to government shelters with their mattresses and in some cases their electronics.
Authorities said the thousands evacuated were going to be returning to their homes as the roads were cleared.
The evacuations, according to Cuban government officials:
-71,600 in Guantanamo
-159,300 in Holguin
- 62,455 in Santiago de Cuba
-71,900 in Las Tunas.
