MIAMI – A room was filled with gratitude last week as family, friends and local community members came together to celebrate 21 remarkable local students at iHeart Media Miami.

Ronald McDonald House Charities and local McDonald's owners and operators teamed up May 18 to award each student with a $2,000 scholarship to be used toward their college education.

The 2017 winners were carefully hand-selected out of more than 500 applicants from Monroe to Okeechobee counties based on their academic achievements.

An exciting component to the awards process included a mentorship program.

For a few weeks, each of the 21 award winners was paired with a mentor consisting of past scholarship recipients, local McDonald's owners and community members. They were also treated to a new outfit for the reception.
