NEW YORK ā Camilo won his first Latin Grammy Award last year and could soon have many more in his hands: The Colombian singer-songwriter of hits like āTutuā and āFavoritoā received a leading 10 nominations Tuesday, including song of the year and record of the year, for āVida de Rico,ā and album of the year for āMis Manosā (My Hands).
Dominican maestro Juan Luis Guerra followed him with six nominations, and Spanish rapper C. Tangana received five. Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny, who triumphed last week at the Billboard Latin Music Awards, garnered four nominations Tuesday.

āI am so happy! I am very proud, but I am just the face... these nominations are for a lot of people who have been working with me to make all these productions, this album āMis Manos,ā" Camilo told The Associated Press in a phone interview from London, where he landed moments before from Barcelona to continue his European tour.

The Latin Grammy Awards, in its 22nd year, will return to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas after being held last year in Miami without an audience because of the pandemic. The gala will be aired live on Univision on Nov. 18, shortly after the āPremiereā ā a livestreamed event in which most of the trophies will be handed out.
Camilo competes twice in the record of the year and song of the year categories. The first one also features āAmenā ā a collaboration with his wife Evaluna Montaner, his father-in-law Ricardo Montaner and his brothers-in-law Mau and Ricky. In the second one, which recognizes the songwriters, he appears as co-author of āDios AsĆ Lo Quisoā performed by Ricardo Montaner and Juan Luis Guerra.
āVida de Ricoā was also nominated for best pop song and āMis Manosā for best pop vocal album. But Camilo, whose sophomore album dared to experiment with rhythms including bachata, calypso, cumbia and perreo, transcended to categories in other music genres: best urban fusion/performance with āTattoo (Remix)ā along with Rauw Alejandro; best tropical song as co-writer of āDios AsĆ Lo Quiso,ā and best regional song for āTuyo y MĆo,ā which he performs with the norteƱo music duo Los Dos Carnales.
Guerra, a 20-time Latin Grammy winner, received his highest number of nominations in a single year Tuesday. In addition to record of the year, he's competing for album of the year and best traditional pop vocal album with āPrivĆ©,ā best tropical song with āPambiche de Novia,ā best arrangement for āOjalĆ” que Llueva CafĆ© (VersiĆ³n PrivĆ©)ā and best long form music video for āEntre Mar y Palmeras.ā
C. Tangana, meanwhile, has already received two golden gramophones and is competing for five: album of the year and record of the year for āEl MadrileƱoā and āTe Olidasteā (with Omar Apollo), respectively; as well as best pop/rock song for āHong Kongā and best alternative song for both āNominaoā and āTe Olvidasteā.
Bad Bunny, a two-time winner, will compete for album of the year with āEl Ćltimo Tour del Mundo,ā also nominated for best urban music album; as well as best rap/hip hop song for āBooker Tā and best urban song for āDĆ”kitiā with Jhay Cortez.
The general categories include 10 or more nominees each from a variety of music genres and nationalities. The presence of female artists, however, is quite limited in the three main ones.
Among the 11 candidates for record of the year, there are only two women: Colombian pop singer Paula Arenas for āA Tu Ladoā, and Evaluna Montaner with her family for āAmĆ©nā. Arenas is also among the 10 nominees for album of the year with āMis Amoresā, along with Nana Caymmi for āNana, Tom, Viniciusā and last yearās winner Natalia Lafourcade, this time for her follow up āUn Canto por MĆ©xico, Vol. IIā.
Karol G, a fan favorite who won best new artist in 2018 and last year received four Latin Grammy nominations, three of them in the main categories, was relegated to the urban music sections with only one nod: best reggaeton performance for āBichotaā, and sheās the only woman in the race.
However, the coveted best new artist award has a slight majority of female contenders, with six out of 11. The candidates are Giulia Be, MarĆa Becerra, Bizarrap, Boza, Zoe Gotusso, Humbe, Rita Indiana, Lasso, Paloma Mami, Marcos Mares and Jualiana VelĆ”squez.
Two English speaking superstars made the list this year: The Weeknd, in the best urban fusion/performance category for the remix of Malumaās āHawĆ”i,ā and Selena Gomez for the music video of āDe Una Vez,ā her Spanish hit released last January that has collected more than 82 million views on YouTube.
This yearās nominees were selected from more than 20,000 online entries in 53 categories and represent artists who posted recordings during the eligibility period, from June 1, 2020 to May 31, 2021.
On Nov. 17, Ruben Blades will be celebrated as the Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year, shortly after Martinho da Vila, Emmanuel, Sheila E. & Pete Escovedo, Fito PĆ”ez, Millie Quezada, JoaquĆn Sabina and Gilberto Santa Rosa receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Academy and Univision have said that they will continue to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all attendees.
