Post-menopausal women at higher risk of A-Fib

A study of more than 83,000 women found one out of four, or 25 percent, will develop irregular heart rhythms after menopause.

The research published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that stress and insomnia were the major contributing factors to the risk of the condition known as atrial fibrillation.

“There’s paroxysmal atrial fibrillation which happens just for a short time as well as chronic atrial fibrillation. the Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation if you modulate the risk factors it will probably go away, the people who have chronic atrial fibrillation need to be on blood thinners and need to see electrophysiologists and may need further treatment,” said cardiologist Dr. Leonard Pianko.

Left untreated, Pianko said atrial fibrillation may lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure or other cardiovascular events.

LINK BETWEEN SERATONIN AND COVID

Researchers are gaining more understanding about why some people may suffer from long COVID.

A recent study found that the virus can linger in the gut, which can reduce serotonin.

Depleted serotonin levels can cause memory problems along with some brain and cognitive symptoms.

The findings could lead to new post-COVID treatments such as medications to boost serotonin levels.

PRICE HIKE EXPECTED FOR COVID TREATMENT

The price of a life-saving COVID treatment could go up soon.

The antiviral drug Paxlovid will move to the commercial marketplace for most patients at the end of the year.

The price before insurance is expected to hover around $530 but some financial experts believe that cost could more than triple.

The medication would still be free for people on Medicare or Medicaid or those who are uninsured but people with commercial insurance are likely to face a copay.
