Mega malls expanding in South Florida

South Florida malls competing to be bigger, better

The Dolphin Mall is set to unveil its five new restaurants and a state-of-the-art parking garage Sept. 15.

Mall general manager Pete Marrero gave Local 10 News a sneak peak.

The five new restaurants include Brio, Kona Grill, Cabo Flats, Burger and Beer Joint and one yet-to-be-named restaurant.

Marrero said believes the demand is there.

South Florida is experiencing a bit of mall expansion madness right now. Sawgrass Mills has been expanding, and the American Dream -- billed to be the nation's largest mall -- is planned for northwest Miami-Dade County.

The shoppers aren't complaining.

Local 10 spoke to school teacher Elizabeth Perez at the Dolphin Mall. She just moved to South Florida from New York and is thrilled.

"I come to the mall, like, three times a week," Perez said.

Tamara Barnes came to the mall with her sister, who was visiting from Jamaica. Mega malls in South Florida are a big draw for Caribbean and Latin American tourists. Barnes said she loves the entertainment.

"The mall is not just for shopping," she said. "I think it's a social place."

That's the excitement mall managers are hoping to cash in on.
