According to Monroe County sheriff's detectives, Rodriguez-Alvarez wrote three checks to her husband -- two for $2,000 and one for $958. Detectives said Martinez deposited the checks into his account and then withdrew more than $4,000 from the same account.

Detectives said Rodriguez-Alvarez admitted that she knew the account she wrote the checks on did not have enough funds to cover the checks. Detectives said Martinez also admitted that he knew the checks were not covered by sufficient funds when he made the deposit and withdrawal.

According to detectives, the couple said they need the money to pay bills, including paying rent and a bondsman. They said they intended to repay the bank once they received their tax refund from the IRS.

Capital Bank said it became aware of the fraudulent activity on Oct. 14 and notified the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
