MIAMI – A man suffered a heart attack Thursday morning after his wife and daughter's dog were attacked by two other dogs.
Ada Rojas Jr. told Local 10 News that her 82-year-old mother, Ada Rojas, was walking her dog named Gucci near Tamiami Canal Road when what appeared to be two stray dogs attacked them.
Several neighbors rushed over to help, and one used a belt to try to get the dogs off of them.
The Chihuahua was killed in the attack and the woman suffered serious injuries to her arm, which required 100 stitches.
"There's a hole in my heart, and if he would have died from something else -- not mauled to death like that," Rojas Jr. said.
Rojas Jr. said Miami-Dade County Animal Services picked up the two dogs and discovered that one was microchipped. Animal control officers are now in the process of searching for that dog's owner.
Rojas Jr. said her father, Miguel Rojas, 89, suffered a mild heart attack after running home with the dying dog in his hands. He is being treated at South Miami Hospital.
"He just cuddled the dog, ran all the way back to the house and started crying, crying, crying until, I guess, he had the heart attack," Rojas Jr. said.
Miami-Dade County Animal Services spokeswoman Lilian Bohorquez said the dogs, which are believed to be American bulldogs or American bulldog-mixes, are at their Medley facility under a 10-day quarantine.
It's unclear whether the dogs will be put down.
