1 killed, 5 injured in Sawgrass Expressway crash

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – One person was killed, and five people were injured in a car accident Sunday morning on the Sawgrass Expressway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Samuel Anthony Ruiz Jr., 19, was killed in the crash happened around 5:30 a.m. near the Oakland Park Boulevard exit, FHP said.  He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Trooper closed the Northbound lanes on the Sawgrass Express as they investigated the accident, those lanes have since been reopened.

Five people, including the drivers of the two vehicles involved the crash, were treated for minor injuries at Broward Health in Fort Lauderdale and Cleveland Clinic in Weston.
