Former head of US Southern Command speaks about nephew killed in Las Vegas shooting

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – One of the 58 victims of the Las Vegas massacre was the nephew of a general who presided over the U.S. Southern Command, Local 10 News has learned.

Gen. Douglas Fraser recently spoke with Local 10 News reporter Glenna Milberg, saying that the overnight call about his nephew’s death is still fresh in his mind.

"Brian (Fraser)'s family -- they are good, strong units, very supportive, but it never leaves,"Ā Fraser said.Ā

Fraser said his nephew was full of life.

"That's the real tragedy, when you look at the number of people impacted,"Ā Fraser said. Ā

The Air Force general, who retired from commanding SouthComm in Doral, recognizes his family's personal heartache is a national issue.

"There is a trend in the country right now of mass shootings, mass casualties. It's devastating to families,"Ā Fraser said. Ā

Fraser said his 34-year-old nephew was a family man, an avid fisherman and hunter and was supportive, as is the general himself, of gun rights and gun responsibility.

"We're never going to be able to legislate people into not committing difficult acts,"Ā Fraser said.Ā

Though he questions the personal need for high-powered weapons and accessories like bump stocks, the general said the answers lie with people engaged in the practice ofĀ "see something, say something."

"It doesn't matter who we are -- it can impact any one of us,"Ā Fraser said. "Asking questions, being involved -- I think we all need to take a part in that.

My best solution is that we are all involved and all committed to protecting one another."

Fraser said he is mindful of mass murderers'Ā need for notoriety and said he wishes the media did not have to say their names or show their pictures, and so, in this report, we have obliged. Ā
