Man in custody after incident at Hilton hotel in downtown Miami

Police called to possible gunfire at hotel on Biscayne Boulevard

MIAMI – A man was taken into custody Friday after a large police presence was called to the Hilton hotel in downtown Miami.

Sky 10 was above the Hilton on Biscayne Boulevard near Northeast 17th Terrace as scores of police vehicles, including armored vehicles, were parked outside the entrance of the hotel.

Miami police Cmdr. Freddie Cruz said the department's SWAT team and hostage negotiation team was at the scene.

"Shortly after 9:30 this morning, our officers responded to this hotel in reference to possible gunfire," he said. "Like I said, at the moment it's still an open investigation. It's still active. We've got plenty of personnel here -- our SWAT team, hostage negotiator team. We've seen tragedies in the past in other parts of the world. We don't want to see it here, so we're taking all the precautions."

Hotel guests told Local 10 News reporter Glenna Milberg that four shots were possibly fired on the 21st floor of the hotel, which is the top floor.

The top floor and lobby were evacuated.

"We are not sure if he's going to be charged with any crime," Cruz said.

No injuries were reported.
