Hialeah police Sgt. Carl Zogby said the victim, Orlando Naranjo, 52, was walking to his car with a witness, when he was approached by his neighbor from across the street, Antonio Fernandez Ramirez.

According to an arrest report, Fernandez Ramirez, 45, was armed with an aluminum baseball bat, and the victim asked him, "Are you going to hit me?"

Police said Fernandez Ramirez answered in Spanish, "Yes, yes. I'll kill you."

Police said the suspect struck Naranjo over the head with the bat, knocking him unconscious. Naranjo fell to the ground, creating a pool of blood.

The victim was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he is listed in critical condition.

Fernandez Ramirez was arrested and taken to the Hialeah Police Department.

Detectives said he admitted to striking the victim with a bat and acknowledged that the victim did not deserve it.

Zogby said Fernandez Ramirez did not provide a motive for the attack.

He remains in jail on an attempted murder charge.
