MIAMI ā A police detective fatally shot a man who tried to escape as he was being taken into custody after a traffic stop Wednesday night in Miami, police said.
The fatal shooting happened about 9 p.m. near Northwest 15th Avenue and Northwest 68th Terrace in Miami's Liberty City neighborhood.
Miami-Dade police Detective Argemis Colome said detectives stopped a red Nissan and conducted a routine records check, which revealed that both men in the car had open arrest warrants.
As detectives made their way back to the car to arrest the men, one of the suspects ran.
During a search for the suspect, one of the detectives found him. A confrontation ensued and shots were fired, Colome said.
"He was in cuffs, and when he ran, the police ran behind him, chasing him," one witness, Leondra Williams, said. "All you heard was pow, pow, pow, pow, so I'm saying, 'I hope they're not shooting him.' By the time we got down there, it was just chaos."
The suspect was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead.
No officers were hurt.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the police-involved shooting.
