HIALEAH, Fla. – A Hialeah man who police said suffers from mental illness appeared in court Thursday after a domestic dispute and was ordered held without bond.
John Chavez, 30, could be seen screaming at Miami-Dade County Judge Mindy Glazer as he appeared on a TV in bond court, but his microphone was muted by his attorney.
"Sir, I know you're upset. I'm sorry," Glazer said to Chavez before ordering corrections officers to remove him.
Police said Chavez ran from police Wednesday morning after officers tried to serve him with an ex parte order at his home on West 21st Avenue.
Authorities said Chavez broke his mother's cellphone and eyeglasses and waved a knife around before officers arrived because he was angry that she had taken out the order against him.
Hialeah police Sgt. Carl Zogby said Ben Sheppard Elementary School, Ben Sheppard Primary Learning Center and Jose Marti Mast Academy were on lockdown during the search for Chavez.
Zogby said Chavez, who is trained as a mixed martial arts fighter, was taken into custody after he was found hiding in a neighbor's yard.
Police said Chavez suffers from depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
He was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, armed burglary and fleeing and eluding police.
