HIALEAH, Fla. – A boy who was reported missing was found Tuesday sleeping on the roof of his Hialeah home.
"I have good grip and body muscle, so I just climbed up," Angel Gort told Local 10 News.
Sky 10 was flying as police were searching for the missing 11-year-old boy in the 7000 block of West 35th Avenue.
Angel climbed onto the roof of his house, where he was found with his toy gun.
A view from Sky 10 showed the boy climb down from the tile roof as police called for him to come down.
Hialeah police Sgt. Carl Zogby said the boy was found after a couple of hours and was not hurt.
Angel told Local 10 News reporter Liane Morejon that he climbed on the roof before his family woke up in the morning because he didn't want to go to summer camp.
He said he could hear his grandmother yelling his name from a block away and said police spotted him after he peeked down from the roof.
"I heard my grandma on the next block screaming my name. She was hysterical. I didn't know how many police there were. First I started with one, and then one left, and then I looked and one said, 'Oh, I think I saw him,'" Angel said. "(The) police officer saw me, and as soon as he saw my face I was like, 'Oh yeah, I'm done.'"
Angel said he knew he "messed up" when he saw helicopters and police in the neighborhood.
"When they found me and I see police and so many news, it was like, wow. They brought a helicopter just for me? I thought in my head, 'Wow, I really messed up,'" Angel said.
Angel said the incident made him learn not to be afraid of police.
Zogby said the boy has run away from home before so his parents initially believed that they would be able to find him.
Angel said he wanted to apologize to the officer who searched for him.
"I'm sorry for everything I've done," Angel said. "There were many other cases the police officers should've been doing (and) not dealing with me."
It's unclear whether the Department of Children and Families is investigating the incident.
