Florida’s health department confirmed 5,117 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday and an additional 163 resident deaths as a result of the novel coronavirus, inching closer to 30,000 fatalities in the state.
The state has now verified 1,849,744 COVID-19 cases since the outbreak began and 29,474 resident deaths, according to health department data.
Another 516 non-residents have died in Florida from COVID-19, bringing the total fatalities in the state just 10 shy of 30,000.
There have also been at least 77,124 resident hospitalizations attributed to the virus in the state since the start of the outbreak.
Deaths verified in the past day include 13 in Miami-Dade County, 14 in Broward County and 21 in Palm Beach County.
Florida has also now verified at least 416 cases of the COVID-19 variant that emerged from the United Kingdom and is believed to be a more contagious strain. That’s the highest number for any state in the country, according to the CDC.

At least 2,551,882 people have been vaccinated in Florida, with 1,232,083 people in the state getting both shots that are needed. Miami-Dade has had 250,504 people vaccinated, Broward has had 216,801 and Monroe 10,377, according to the latest numbers posted by the state.
The statewide positivity rate for yesterday’s testing was 6.40%.

Worldwide, the number of COVID-19 cases reported is more than 110.1 million. There have been more than 2.4 million deaths worldwide attributed to the pandemic, according to data compiled from various sources by Johns Hopkins University.
The United States has confirmed over 27.8 million cases and has had more than 491,000 deaths from COVID-19, the highest totals in the world.
