Man arrested on attempted murder charge after ‘slap box’ fight outside sports bar

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – A 33-year-old man was arrested Tuesday, days after he severely injured another man in what started as a mutual “slap box” fight outside a Pembroke Pines sports bar, authorities said.

Eric Rodriguez, of Pembroke Pines, is facing an attempted murder charge.

According to police, Rodriguez and the victim engaged in the slap box fight just before 2:45 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Rickey’s Sports Bar & Grill, located at 8333 Pines Blvd.

Police said the slap boxing escalated at some point and the victim was knocked to the ground.

The suspect, who the victim knew only as “E”, then began to kick the victim in the head and face, knocking him unconscious, authorities said.

Police said Rodriguez then fled the scene without rending aid to the victim.

The victim was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said he is facing an attempted murder charge due to the severity of the victim’s injuries.

No other details were immediately released.
