Convicted felon accused of murder at bus stop in Florida City

FLORIDA CITY, Fla. – A 47-year-old convicted felon was at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Monday after confessing to a murder, police said.

Detectives accused Charles Rodgers of fatally shooting Ronnie Robinson, 51, of Homestead, on Nov. 3, in Florida City, and arrested him on Sunday morning.

Witnesses told police officers that Rodgers admitted to killing Robinson at a bus stop near the intersection of southwest 328 Street and the South Miami-Dade Busway.

Rodgers is from Lehigh Acres and has a criminal record in both Lee and Miami-Dade counties.

In 2009, when a judge sentenced him to seven years in prison for possession of a firearm, ammunition, or concealed weapon, he had five convictions, including two 1997 cases of attempted murder and a 1996 burglary assault.

The Florida Department of Corrections released Rodgers from prison on Feb. 28, 2016. On Monday afternoon, records showed Rodgers was facing a second-degree murder charge.
