Residents in Martin County survey impact of Hurricane Nicole, know it could’ve been much worse

JENSEN BEACH, Fla. – The worst of Hurricane Nicole is behind the residents of Martin County, but it was certainly a rough Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Strong winds sent water slamming into a sea wall near Jensen Beach.

“It was pretty scary, there was a lot of wind a lot of rain,” said Jensen Beach resident Dave Power. “We heard it rattling a little bit. The water came right over the road. They closed the road so if you lived in Sailfish Point you couldn’t get home.”

The impacts of Nicole were felt in other areas along the coast, like Hutchinson Island.

Water from the Indian River pushed up onto A1A, the winds so strong a mix of seaweed and debris pushed on to the street.

In Jupiter, rising water, rough waves and currents took over parts of the beach.

Sideways rain, along with high winds in Sewall’s Point led to flooded streets and driveways covered in water.

“We were more concerned about power outages if that was going to happen,” said Martin County resident Barry Brunner.

Local 10 News cameras also spotted ocean waters being pushed inland in Port Salerno, leaving a boat ramp and dock outside the popular Twisted Tuna submerged.

Overall the conditions were much better Thursday as residents deal with high tide.

There have been no reports of major damage or injuries.
