Police officer fatally shoots unarmed man in downtown Orlando, chief says

ORLANDO, Fla. – A police officer fatally shot an unarmed man early Monday morning during a narcotics investigation, according to the Orlando Police Department.

The shooting was at about 1:50 a.m., near the intersection of Jefferson Street and North Orange Avenue in Downtown Orlando, according to Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith.

“The person who is the suspect, made a quick movement as to retrieve a firearm and the shooting happened,” Smith said.

The man, who was not in possession of a gun, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital and the department placed the police officer on a paid administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting, according to Smith.

“This is an area where we seize a lot of firearms,” Smith said, adding that he plans to release the officer’s bodycam video within the next 30 days.
