Residents watch fugitive climb tree at cemetery in Dania Beach

Dania Beach residents watched deputies and fire rescue personnel surround a large tree on Monday at the Woodlawn Cemetery.

A suspect wanted on a felony warrant climbed a tree that is about 30-feet high in an attempt to avoid arrest.

“He was running from the cops, and they tased him and he went up to the top of the tree, and that’s all I know,” said witness Tina Jones.

One of the residents described the suspect as a “good kid.”

“I’m praying to God he comes down and gets the help he needs,” said Carmela Gardener. “He’s a sweet boy, he’s just messed up right now.”

The man’s relatives were brought in to help coax him out of the tree.

After roughly two hours, the man came out of the tree safely and was immediately placed in handcuffs by awaiting deputies.

He was eventually placed on a stretcher and taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation.

Although they did not immediately release his identity, detectives were asking anyone with further information about the man to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
