Unofficial shark season is heating up off the Florida Keys

2 sharks pinged off Marathon, Key West

MARATHON, Fla. – Unofficial shark season is heating up off the Florida Keys, as two great white sharks are pinged nearby.

The shark tracking outfit OCEARCH reported it is tracking two Great White sharks this week off of the Florida Keys.

Keji, a nearly 10-foot-long 600-pound juvenile pinged off Key West.

Sarah, a 10-foot-four-inch 632-pound female pinged off Marathon.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, many shark species are common in Florida’s waterways and more than 13 species of shark use the areas as nursery grounds for their pups.

FWC says sharks typically move inshore and north in the spring and summer, and offshore and south in fall and winter months.
