South Florida nonprofit launches aid drive for Hurricane Milton, Helene relief

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – As South Florida braces for the aftermath of Hurricanes Milton and Helene, the nonprofit organization Food For The Poor has sprung into action to support the region’s most vulnerable communities.

In addition to helping those impacted by Hurricane Milton, the charity continues to provide critical assistance to families still recovering from the devastation left by Hurricane Helene.

Operating from its Coconut Creek warehouse, FFTP has launched a hurricane collection drive, seeking donations of cleaning and hygiene supplies that are essential for families rebuilding their lives.

Jisabelle Garcia-Pedroso, FFTP’s director of disaster preparedness and response, said the organization is working through local church networks to ensure that aid reaches the hardest-hit areas.

While FFTP’s focus is currently on providing relief in response to Milton, the organization has not lost sight of the continuing struggles faced by communities still reeling from Hurricane Helene. For weeks, the nonprofit has been delivering food, water, and emergency supplies to families in need, but the demand for essential goods continues to rise.

In an effort to keep pace with the urgent need, FFTP has asked South Floridians to contribute hygiene items such as soap, deodorant and shampoo. These everyday essentials, which are often overlooked, can make a tremendous difference to families struggling to recover from natural disasters.

The warehouse at 6401 Lyons Road in Coconut Creek is serving as a central hub for receiving donations. Items can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with extended hours on the next two Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

For those looking to make a difference, the following items are especially in demand:

  • Soap
  • Deodorant
  • Shampoo
  • Cleaning products (such as bleach, disinfectant wipes, and sponges)
