MIAMI — A dirt bike rider trying to flee cops instead lost control and hit a pedestrian in the heart of Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood on Saturday night, sending her to the hospital and the suspect to jail, according to police.

Miami police said an officer noticed a large group of dirt bike and ATV riders “gathering and impeding traffic” on Northwest Second Avenue and 27th Street at around 11:15 p.m.

Police said two other officers on foot patrol saw the group as they approached Northwest 26th Street and approached Chamari Jaheim Pippins, 22, of Hollywood, who was on a blue Yamaha dirt bike with no license tag.

After one of Pippins’ friends told him that officers were coming up to him, police said he looked back, made “eye contact” with one of the officers and “accelerated” in an attempt to get away.

According to an arrest report, Pippins “spun the tires to a point where he was unable to attain traction” and lost control, “striking a victim on the sidewalk” and hitting a black Infiniti parked on the street.

Police said the pedestrian suffered “multiple injuries,” including an elbow fracture and cuts on her eyelid and foot; medics later took her to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The report states that officers took Pippins into custody and found he had a concealed Glock 45 pistol.

Police arrested Pippins on charges of aggravated fleeing and eluding causing injury, possession of a weapon while committing an offense and resisting an officer without violence. He was also cited for failure to obey a police officer or firefighter and failure to have a vehicle registration.

Records show that Pippins, booked into jail early Sunday morning, remained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center Monday morning on a $5,500 bond.
