MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — The United Way is working to support vulnerable communities, and Saturday that effort brought local leaders together to plant hundreds of trees at Camp Mahachee.

Corporate sponsors, community partners and some county representatives took part in the effort, along with many families and children, making it a day of volunteering for all ages.

The project is part of an ongoing restoration of the 11.5-acre camp led by the Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida. Their goal this year is to plant 10,000 trees at Camp Mahachee, with about 600 planted Saturday.

Organizers say the effort will support the health and sustainability of the camp’s ecosystem, with benefits expected to last well beyond the day of service and help create a resilient outdoor classroom for future generations.

It was a half day of work aimed at making a long-term impact in the treasured natural space in Miami-Dade.

Some of the corporate sponsors include First Citizens Bank, Duane Morris, Native Tree Nursery, and Bank of America.
